Classics Lab

Advanced students in Classical languages and/or classical archaeology have an opportunity to work intensively with departmental faculty to contribute to a variety of ongoing faculty research projects. Faculty projects vary from year to year but may include:

  • studies in Mediterranean palaeoclimate
  • sustainable agriculture in antiquity
  • lab-based scientific study and digital modeling of archaeological artifacts
  • research in ethnobotany and ancient medicine
  • word-study projects relating to Large-Language Models
  • advanced study of terminology reflecting cognitive and emotional states

These research internships offer the chance for students to develop language and research skills, gain exposure to texts and research methods beyond basic curriculum and work towards tangible research outcomes for their professional portfolios: research posters, conference presentations, online content or publications. You can find more info about current projects on the Birney Lab website.

Students can participate either as contributors or research interns.
Research interns in the Classics Lab can receive half-or full credit in Greek, Latin, Classical Studies, or Archaeology. depending upon the nature of their research project.  The minimum commitment is 6 hours a week for half credit and 12 hours a week for full credit.
